There’s no arguing that one of the best ways to explore Alaska is by cruising the 1500 miles of coastline know as "Alaska’s Inside Passage" — but not everyone wants a traditional cruise ship. Traveling on the Alaska Marine Highwayboffers a fleet of fast far‐ranging ferries, each bearing the name of an Alaskan glacier. Giving you the opportunity to vacation, with or without your car or RV, and even the family pet is welcome. With all the scenic beauty of a traditional small cruise ship, yet puts you in charge of your own itinerary, you are free to stop and go as you chart your own course through seven ports of call along the Inside Passage.
Alaska presents one of the most scenic sections on earth‐ more coastline than the rest of the United States combined, and more than half its small coastal communities are unreachable by conventional roads. The ferries are clean and comfortable, with observation lounges, heated solariums, a wide‐menu selection in the restaurants and cafeterias. Unlike traditional cruise ships the crews are all Alaskan residents and tipping is not necessary. Many ships have card rooms, small video arcades, reading rooms and toddler play areas.
The Alaska Marine Highway operates an extensive 3,500 mile route with a fleet of vessels that are designed to carry passengers and vehicles ranging in size from motorcycles to large freight containers. Our ferries operate year-round to provide essential transportation to over 35 coastal communities, many that are not accessible by road. Mainline vessels are their largest ships and typically take more than one day to travel between start and end ports, that provide road access. Day boats connect smaller communities with each other or with the mainline vessel routes and shuttle ferries are a sub-class of the day boat ferries.

The Alaska Ferry does NOT sail into Anchorage. The closest you would be able to get is 60 miles south of Anchorage in Whittier.
Alaska Airlines does fly into Glacier Bay. There is no daily ferry service to Gustavus so you may want to sail one way and fly the other. There are also private transportation companies who service Gustavus.
If you are planning to spend time in Juneau and you do not have a car, make sure you arrange for transportation in advance since the ferry docks outside Juneau in Auke Bay with no convenient services..
The Alaska Ferry does NOT sail into Seattle. Bellingham is the farthest southern port to board the Alaska Ferry.
The Alaska Ferry has only one sailing that allows for avoiding Canada completely and it does not sail year-around. If you are thinking about sailing in hopes of avoiding Canadian Customs please call us for more information, schedule and rates. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE (New Window)
There are no sailings to British Columbia. The AMHS does not have a vessel equipped to service Prince Rupert, due to international service regulations.
